Artist’s View of Chatham Fish Pier

“Keeping Watch”

Painting by Paul Schulenburg

“My first inclination was to simply paint the worker at the Chatham Fish Pier looking out at the water, waiting for the next boat to return with its catch. I liked the man’s casual stance and the way the light fell on the scene. Then it occurred to me that the pier worker is rarely alone as he waits. There are always gulls and seals anxiously awaiting the arrival of the fishing boats. I liked that the man looks like he is calmly waiting, while the seagull looks more serious and focused on his mission. Together, they wait.”
