Character Studies

For her new book, fine art and commercial photographer Shareen Davis combines her two passions: the Cape Cod fishing community and photography. “Through the Fog” is the culmination of photographing hundreds of fishermen and advocates over three decades. Davis, a former photo editor and commercial fisherman, says she was inspired by environmental-styled photography by Annie Leibovitz and 1930s photographer Dorothea Lange. “The photos are character studies within themselves,” says Davis. “I let some of the portraits speak for themselves, like the cover.” In other instances, there are quotes from meetings, collected oral histories and personal essays written by Davis herself for some of the photos. “It is my hope to celebrate the beauty of the industry,” says Davis, “and its people independent, of any fishing business, group or fisheries type.” –Lisa Leigh Connors
