Quality Comes First At Focus Gallery

At Focus, the quality of the print is just as important as the image. “There’s so much photography out there,” says owner Cindy Vallino. “There are very few photographers who make prints. It’s like a dressmaker going to Nordstrom and saying, “Here is my pattern. Will you sell it? We only take the finished product.” For example, Michael Kahn creates hand-crafted sepia-toned and black-and-white images of sailboats, sand and marshes. Many of the fine art photographers represented by Focus are also published book photographers, such as Bryant Austin, who creates incredible life-size whale portraits. Focus, which has another location in Cohasset, features prints ranging in size from 10 inches to 10 feet. “We have become known for some large pieces and unusual, extreme photography,” says Vallino, who says some of her best clients are photographers themselves. “That makes me feel like we are doing something right.” Even better, the gallery hosts a fundraiser every year to support a local conservation cause. “It gives it a little more dimension to selling art than just wall decorations,” says Vallino. “There’s a cause behind it and an educational part, too.”
